We did it! We’ve actually begun this amazing journey that we have been discussing for the past 3 years.
Our journey started on Sunday, August 14, 2022. We left the safety of our slip at Safe Harbor Marina in Sandusky, Ohio and headed North to Put-in-Bay. The journey over was great, but entering The Key Harbor Marina to dock was a little eye opening. Thankfully Captain Pete was piloting and Co-Captain Cheri was the Dock girl with the lines. Cheri was so supportive of Pete when she whispered into the Marriage Saver Headsets, “How are you going to do this?” The marina was still jam packed and maneuvering was a real feat. Pete did a great job – no pressure at all. One of the dock hands was actually from warm and cheerful Centerville too! By Monday, the marina was down to 3 boats. We met up with a former pilot that Pete worked with at Airborne. Rick took us for a tour around the island and took us to lunch at The Goat. Great place for food. Tuesday we explored on our own. We visited the Historical Society and Perry’s Museum. We rented a Golf Cart and went to Cyrstal Cave and Perry’s Cave to view Stalagtites and Stalgmites.
Wednesday, August 17th – Loop Leg 2: Put-in-Bay to Jefferson Beach Marina – This was a very long day} 3 hours on Lake Erie to the Detroit River where we spent 4 hours slowly traversing up the river but there was very little traffic or fishermen. We went under the Ambassador Bridge that goes back and forth from the US to Canada. Thursday, we met up with Pete’s college roommate David and his wife Lois. We showed them the boat, caught up on with each other and went to lunch.
Friday, August 19th – Loop Leg 3: Jefferson Beach to St. Clair – The St. Clair River is quite narrow and we bucked the current the entire time so it was another long day but beautiful and sunny. When we arrived at St. Clair, We had our first Bridge Opening! We were so excited.. You call the Bridge Tender and every half hour the bridge opens up to let boaters out and in. The bridge we went through was called a BASCULE BRIDGE. This is the most common type with 2 leaves that tilt vertically on a hinge like doors being opened skyward. So Cool! When we arrived at The Marina we met lots of really great people (Sheila and Mark) who helped us dock the boat and were a wealth of knowledge. The small town of St. Clair was perfect to walk, to explore, to ride our bikes, and to visit the many restaurants. Saturday we went to a fantastic, free outdoor Jazz Festival in the park. We met another couple who were Looping. More excitement – Loopers! LOL
Tuesday, August 23rd – Loop Leg 4: St. Clair to Lexington. Quick stop with a great Break Water Walk
Wednesday, August 24th – Loop Leg 5: Lexington to Port Sanilac. We met more Loopers: Gold Loopers and 5 year process looping – T.J. and Julie. They invited us for our first Docktails! Time to chow on snacks and drinks and talk what else? – Boating and places they’ve been and places they’re going and definite must sees! More Good information – Woohoo!
Thursday, August 25th – Loop Leg 6: Port Sanilac to Harbor Beach.
This is so much fun to read!! I really learn a lot from some of your “ boating” descriptions since I am totally clueless about any of the stuff!! Haha
Glad to follow along! Sounds like you’re off to a great start.
Hmmm…. I have idea where any of those places are except Put-in-Bay! I’m going to get a geography lesson (or two)!
Oh yes! Me too! And who knew but the Michigan people are quite nice.
